On August 18, in 1868, helium was found by stargazers considering the sun amid an aggregate sun based obscuration. The site of this revelation was none other than the Andhra drift. It is the main component to have been found in the sun before it was known to exist on earth.

While the cosmologists confirmed this speculation, it was Pogson who suspected that the splendid yellow line they found in the sun's range was not because of the nearness of sodium, known for its yellow fire, in the sun's climate, yet an up to this point obscure component. This was affirmed by Joseph Norman Lockyer, who likewise gave it the name of helium – as helios alludes to the sun. It was just in 1895, over 25 years after the fact, that helium was disengaged in the lab by William Ramsey. 

The site of the Madras Observatory presently houses the Nungambakkam Meteorological Observatory, and Norman Pogson, the pioneer of helium, kicked the bucket in 1891 and is covered at St George's Cathedral, Chennai.
